RV POWER / ENGINEERED HOUSE BATTERIES

Stay longer. Power everything that matters.

LiFePO₄ house-battery systems for camper vans, towables and motorhomes—configured around real loads, installation space and three charging sources.

REAL USE / ONE SYSTEM

Comfort off-grid without guessing the battery size.

01

Daily DC loads

Lighting, vent fans, water pump, USB-C devices and a compressor refrigerator are best served directly from the DC bus.

02

Work & kitchen

Laptops, TV, coffee makers and microwaves add AC demand; inverter rating and surge current must be checked together.

03

Longer stays

Solar yield, alternator charging and shore-power availability decide how quickly the battery can recover—not capacity alone.

COMMON RV SYSTEM SIZES

Four useful starting points.

These are reference architectures, not universal kits. Final capacity depends on daily energy, simultaneous loads, climate, cable length and available charging.

Compact

Camper van / small towable

1.28 kWh
Battery bank
12.8V 100Ah
Inverter
1,200 VA
Solar reference
200–220 W
Typical loads
Lights, fan, laptop, small TV, phones

Touring

Medium 12V RV

2.56 kWh
Battery bank
12.8V 200Ah
Inverter
2,000 VA
Solar reference
400–440 W
Typical loads
Plus fridge, coffee maker, small microwave

Comfort

Medium / large 12V RV

5.12 kWh
Battery bank
12.8V 400Ah
Inverter
3,000 VA
Solar reference
600–700 W
Typical loads
More AC use, e-bikes, short high-power loads

High-power

Large coach / long cable runs

5.12–10.24 kWh
Battery bank
25.6V 200–400Ah
Inverter
3,000–5,000 VA
Solar reference
1.0–1.7 kW
Typical loads
Larger appliances; A/C only after load study

Reference values align with current published RV system examples from major component makers. 120V or 230V AC output is selected for the destination market.

Air conditioning and electric water heating require a separate duty-cycle and thermal study.

Planning estimate only. Final BMS, cable, fuse, charger and inverter settings must be checked against exact equipment data and local rules.

THREE WAYS TO RECHARGE

Design the battery as part of the vehicle.

A dependable RV system coordinates the battery, BMS, protection, charging and monitoring. Each energy source needs its own correctly rated path.

Protected RV lithium battery electrical compartment

Solar → MPPT

Roof or portable panels feed an MPPT controller sized for array voltage, current and battery voltage.

Alternator → DC-DC

A current-limited DC-DC charger protects the alternator and gives LiFePO₄ the correct charging profile.

Shore power → inverter/charger

Campground or household AC powers loads and charges the house bank through the correct 120V or 230V equipment.

Minimum engineering checklist

  • LiFePO₄-compatible BMS with charge and discharge protection
  • Main fuse close to the battery, branch protection and covered busbars
  • Cable size and terminals verified for continuous current, surge and voltage drop
  • Low-temperature charge protection where freezing is possible
  • Battery monitor, secure mounting and service access
  • Model-specific UN 38.3 / transport documents and destination compliance review

SIZE BY ENERGY, THEN POWER

A simple brief prevents an expensive mismatch.

1. List energy

For each appliance: watts × hours used per day = Wh/day. For cycling loads such as a refrigerator, use measured or manufacturer daily consumption.

2. Add real-world margin

Allow for inverter loss, standby draw, cold weather, battery ageing and days without full charging.

3. Check peak power

Add simultaneous loads and verify starting surge. Battery BMS, inverter, fuse and cables must all support it.

4. Check recharge

Compare daily Wh consumed with realistic solar, alternator and shore-power charging—not panel nameplate alone.

Planning example

If daily loads total 1,600Wh and you plan around 80% usable storage, the minimum nominal bank is about 2,000Wh before adding reserve days: 1,600 ÷ 0.8 = 2,000Wh.

OEM / CUSTOM BUILD

Built for the compartment—not forced into it.

LithVolt can configure the enclosure, voltage, capacity, BMS, heating, communications and terminals around an OEM or conversion project.

Runtime and solar recovery vary with the actual appliance duty cycle, temperature, irradiance, installation and system losses. High-power appliances—especially air conditioning and electric water heating—require a project load study.
